When you have a rough frame of your travel you start to design your travel itinerary. Do a detailed plan by making a list of things you can see and do there. Try searching the web by putting in simple questions like „What to see in …“. You will find lots of pages with such information. Write down a list of attractions you find for later.
You may find helpful our free and easy app Make your own travel itinerary.
Find instructions how to use it at the bottom of this post.
If that is too tiresome for you, go on a site Visit A City. It is a very amusing application for creating your itinerary and getting very useful information. They have a mobile app too. The best is that it is free and it works offline.
And buy a guidebook. We prefer Eyewitness guides if they are available for your chosen destination. But any will do as well.
Start making a list of recommended must-see monuments, museums, sites, events and special worth seeing points. Add other things you want to do during the trip. Later you will narrow it down to a reasonable number. You can download free templates of tables on page tables, lists.
Next to every place make a note of what type of attraction it is. Then try to find out (also online) if is it free or if you need a ticket and how much it costs. Important is do they have any reduction on price, or do they have any day or time with free entrance. That will help you decide what to see and when.
The hard part is to decide what NOT to see. For us always. But it is important because too many things to see can spoil all. Either you will find it impossible to visit all in real-time (something always goes differently than planned). Or you will force it, succeed but end up too tired for anything or worse getting ill. So choose wisely, only places you think are the best for you.
Be sure to take enough time to rest. Plan time to have meals, coffee, drink or short rest in your accommodation.
Search for food that is typical or famous for the destination. Online you will find lots of suggestions. Choose in advance at least a couple of places to eat close to your room or any attraction you are visiting.

Do not forget to search if there are some special things to see nearby. You can make one-day excursions and add plus value to your travel.
For example, during our stay 4 days in Lisbon we made two one-day trips:
1. to Sintra-Cabo da Roca- Cascais (all with local transport)
2. 5 cities: Fatima, Batalha, Alcobasa, Nazare, Obidos (organised tour )
And from Porto, we went on a one-day tour to Braga and Guimares also with local transport.
Take your time and investigate. When you feel that you are sure about what you want to see it is time to make the travel itinerary. See an example we made for travel to Portugal. The free downloadable empty table here tables, lists
